St Matthew’s Closed Churchyard

In 2020 Wilsden Parish Council took over the management of green spaces in the parish and established the Closed Churchyard Wildflower project specifically to maintain the cemetery for woodland plants, grasses and wildlife. The objective was to create a beautiful and peaceful space for Wilsdeners to enjoy the churchyard and its wildflowers. This involves balancing the need to establish wildflowers and increase the biodiversity in the churchyard with a responsibility for enabling access to individual graves at all times of the year. We recognise that reducing more formal mowing of an old churchyard may upset some and inspire others. This is likely to be more challenging during the early years as we aim to discourage growth of the more vigorous species and encourage wildflowers.
